New research study on hydrogen fire engines begins – AirQualityNews


A new project will study the feasibility of a hydrogen fire truck.

The project will see hydrogen fuel engineering company ULEMCo partnering with the Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service.

The eight-month research project will consist of creating a detailed model of hydrogen energy needs. This will include the energy required to pump water for a minimum of four hours, as well as the optimum range for such a vehicle.

The testing process will gather real world data based on the performance of a fuel cell during the project.

ULEMCo will then design the hydrogen fuel cell electric powertrain for the vehicle with the goal of a full specification and detailed engineering design for a prototype vehicle.

Along with the study, the county council will develop a plan for hydrogen refueling needs across its fire and rescue services, as well as broader plans to develop hydrogen infrastructure throughout the region. county.

Cllr Pete Sudbury, member of the Oxfordshire County Council for Climate Change and Environment Cabinet, said: “Hydrogen could play an important role in our decarbonization efforts, especially when electrifying battery operated is difficult in heavy vehicles such as fire trucks.

“I am delighted that we are partnering with ULEMCo for this innovative feasibility study as an important step in the exploration and promotion of zero carbon solutions. The County Council Fire and Rescue Service will provide operational insight while the council’s unique innovation center as well as the climate action team will work with ULEMCo to facilitate the project.
